Located at the center of Bohai Economic Rim, adjacent to the sea and with several rivers flowing through it, Tianjin is not only an important hub of transportation that links the north and the south, the west and the east, but also an important channel for the neighbor landlocked countries to reach the sea. Over the past years, Tianjin accelerated the pace of building an international port city, constantly improving the port facilities and extending the functions of the ports and the harbor, giving full play to its role as a portal of opening in the north of China.

Tianjin Port is the highest-level artificial deep-water port in the world. It is one of the ports with the most advanced facilities and the most complete functions in China. In 2011, its cargo throughput reached 453 million tons, the fourth in the world. Tianjin Port has established shipping and trade relations with over 500 ports from 180 countries or regions in the world. Its lines cover all the major ports across the world.

Tianjin Port has a broad economic hinterland. It has established 21 waterless ports in Mainland China, extending its service area to nearly 5 million square kilometers. Nan’gang Industrial Zone has been open to navigation, and it will be built into a world-class heavy industry and port comprehensive functional zone. The Construction Program of Tianjin Northern International Shipping Center Core Functional Area has been approved by the State Council, which will accelerate the construction of Binhai New Area into an international shipping and logistics center in the north.

Tianjin Railway Station is a large-scale comprehensive transport hub that integrates universal speed railway, intercity railway, and urban rail transit. Tianjin West Railway Station, as one of the five starting stations of Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, was completed and put in operation in 2011; it serves as a key hub linking the Yangtze River Delta and Bohai-rim Region. Tianjin-Qinhuangdao Passenger Line and the underground diameter line connecting Tianjin Railway Station and Tianjin West Railway Station will be completed and opened to traffic in 2012. Tianjin Binhai International Airport, one of China’s large modern international airport, is the first e-freight airport in Mainland China.

As for highways, an highway network has basically taken shape in the central urban area; Jinning expressway, Binbao expressway and Haibin expressway have been open to traffic, an expressway network has taken shape in Tianjin, radiating to the north, northeast, east, and northwest. Great effort has been made to develop rail transport. In addition to Subway Line 1, which is in regular operation, Line 9 has been put in trial operation. Lines 2 and 3 are in the phase of fitting and debugging. The construction of Lines 5 and 6 are also underway. It is estimated that by 2015, the 6 subway lines will form a ring-radiating subway network and serve as the backbone of public transport in Tianjin.
