History and Introduction of the Sport

Table tennis was originated in Britain, and was developed from tennis. It has undergone several stages of development. In the 1950s, Japanese athletes created the pen-hold grip and rank first in the field. Later, the technique of pen-hold grip was carried forward by Chinese athletes and became no.1 in the world which lasted until the mid-1980s. In the middle and late 1980s, Chinese table tennis were suffering from a trough, while the men’s team from Sweden, Europe rose and won the men’s champion three times in a row in 1989, 1991 and 1993 in the World table tennis Championships. Ever since the late 1990s, Chinese men’s table tennis rose again and regained the Swaythling Cup from 1999 to 2001.

Table tennis became a competition event for the first time in 1988, and then it had a tremendous development and became one of the sport events that have the most participants. There are more than 187 association members in International Table Tennis Federation at present. Table tennis became one of the competition events (5-13, December, 2009, Hong Kong) in the 5th East Asian Games.

Spectators’ Manners

1. The period from the preparation of serving a ball to the dead ball, spectators in the whole court should keep silence.

Don’t use the flashlight when taking a photo. The flashlight has a huge impact on the competition of table tennis because the hit between the table tennis paddle and the ball is completed in an instant and the flashlight dazzles the athlete’s eyes and makes it impossible to judge the condition of a coming ball which influence the quality and the hit rate of a returning ball.
