History and Introduction of the Sport

Volleyball is a sport started in modern time, and was born in the same college at a similar time as basketball. In 1895, William Morgan, a secretary in charge of sports in Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, US, considering the high intensity of the popular basketball at the time, created an indoor game called volleyball that can be participated in people of all ages and both genders with moderate amount of activity.

Morgan’s game was widely welcomed as soon as it was created. In order to become a competition event for better promotion, Morgan drew up the world’s first set of competition rules of volleyball. In 1896, the earliest competition of volleyball was held in Sports College in Springfield according to the rules ma+de by Morgan.

In 1946, International Volleyball Federation was established. In 1964, volleyball became one of the competition events in Tokyo Olympic Games. In May, 2001, volleyball became a competition event for the first time in the 3rd East Asian Games held in Osaka, Japan. In this year’s East Asian Games, the volleyball competition will be held in the gymnasium in Nankai University from 4 to 13, October, 2013.

Spectators’ Manners:

The spectators should enter the gymnasium in advance, lessen their activities during the competition, and turn off the cell phones or on vibration or mute. The spectators should respect the performance of the athletes and the work of the referee, to whom uncivil or insulted words and behaviors are prohibited. Other improper behaviors like shooting off fireworks, casting objects to the field, damaging the public property, making rude gestures, and smoking are forbidden. Flashlight is inappropriate in photographing.

Before the competition, all the athletes assemble in the field to hold the ceremony, and salute to the spectators while the spectators reply with warm applause. The introduction of each coach, athlete and referee should also be replied with warm applause.

In the competition, when the athlete serves a ball, all noises are allowed. If the athlete services a fault, the spectators may applaud to congratulate the winner. Tendentious watching is allowed, but the spectators should try to keep in harmony with the whole atmosphere. If the whole crowd is doing the wave, don’t just sit there still; when everyone around you is sad, you shouldn’t over-gloat for it is impolite and easy to cause the conflict between fans. In the time-out, all noises are allowed.

All in all, the spectators should be both passionate and sensible. They should pay attention to the international impact and national dignity and show the virtue of self-respect and generosity of the Chinese people in front of the other nations and nationalities. They should be able to accept all possible consequences of the competition and applaud for both groups to encourage the athletes to continue the game in a friendly atmosphere, and avoid behaviors that may disgrace the national dignity.
